Shawnee Slopes is a residential neighbourhood in the south-west quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is bounded to the south by James McKevitt Road, to the east by Macleod Trail, to the north by Fish Creek Provincial Park and to the west by Evergreen Street. The Shawnee Slopes Golf Course is developed in the center of the community. This community is closely connected with Evergreen Estates, the northern section of the neighbouring Evergreen community. Shawnee and Evergreen Estates share the same Community association, while the rest of Evergreen is independent.
Shawnee Slopes Golf Course is currently under threat of re-development from its new owners. They are asking the City of Calgary to re-zone the land from Special Reserve - Recreational to Residential and Residential / Commercial and have submitted plans to put 1600 high density and small homes and a strip mall on what is a significant greenspace in the heart of the community. The local community are very much in opposition to these plans.
It was named for the Shawnee native people.
Demographics:
In 2008 the neighbourhood had a population of 1,539. Residents in this community had a median household income of $106,379 in 2005, with 3.4% of the residents living in low income households. As of 2006, 26.9% of the residents were immigrants. A proportion of 12.9% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 1.6% of the housing was used for renting. |
